Flowers that Bloom in the Fall

Two things you might not normally think of together: autumn and… blooming flowers.

But they pair very well when you’re thinking of new piano students. If you have students starting in our Piano Adventures Primer Level, you probably already know where this is going! “Round Hand Shape” is our Technique Secret No. 2, and “blooming flowers” is the image we introduce along with it. It’s a delightful and relatable image for students to quickly grasp how to achieve a nice, round hand shape. Starting from a fist (rather than a flat hand) ensures the student will maintain the bridge that is so critical for successful playing.

  • It’s always great to keep reviewing these very important foundational points. Even after teaching for 20 years, it’s a wonderful reminder for me to make sure I thoroughly teach these points with my beginner and even non-beginner students. Love these little videos!!

  • I love this! Thanks for the reminder. This always seems to help kids get the idea of the correct hand shape and finger preparation. Now, if I could just keep their hand that way. 🙂

  • Thanks for continuing these posts. So very helpful to have new terms and ways of looking at technique.
I am wondering if you would consider making your Technique Secrets Poster into a paper size, 8 x 11 inch chart as well. I just don’t have a wall to hang that size poster but I do want to have that chart.
    Thanks for considering.
