Some of us may still be regretting (but happily regretting) October’s Sugar overload. November, however, gets serious. There is so much to prepare for! Thanksgiving, of course. But soon after, the holidays, and maybe holiday recitals. If we had a thousand years to plan and prep, we might not be fully ready. But wait—we do have A Thousand Years in the popular Twilight Saga song by Christina Perri, featured in FunTime® Piano Hits. And it’s a tranquil waltz that teases with tonal ambiguity. Are we in F Major? No, we gradually crescendo to a G Dominant (“one step closer”) that ushers in a quiet climax in C Major. We then can waltz to a gently rocking melody that erases tonal questions and provides a delicate balance. Yet, a surprising final move. Instead of resolving to the tonic at the end, the dominant slips back to F Major, this time with an added seventh, further clouding our expectations. As Dr. Faber notes, it’s as if the music wants to return us to the opening, like something unfinished, something rather spiritual. With Yves Préfontaine we might say, “I shall go now towards winter, my free soul flowering with harvests.”
