Artistry Magic—at the Olympics!

As we watch the Olympic athletes during these coming weeks, we pianists have some idea of what it means to train. Practice, prepare, warm up, and perform! Whether a skater, skier, or pianist, how to practice for technical excellence is key. That’s where the Technique & Artistry secrets are so helpful. Here, in a performance of Olympic Torch, Dr. Faber explains the Level 3A Technique Secret “Wrist Takes a Bow.” When the arm weight drops, the flexible wrist absorbs the energy with a responsive bow. It works beautifully for this late-elementary D major piece. Let’s try it with some advanced Gershwin chords!

  • Dear Randy,
Thank you for giving us Artistry Magic in a nutshell. My email box is always so full, so it is wonderful to have a great little gem in under three minutes! Bravo!

  • I was just showing a student this same technique today. She was a little reticent at doing it as it “seems” to be more work than she uses now but you only have to listen to the sound quality produced to appreciate the technique. I will send this video to her to watch. Thank you Randall your explanations are so clear and to the point and of all the emails in my in box I always watch yours first!
