Piano Adventures Receives 2018 MTNA Frances Clark Keyboard Pedagogy Award

We are pleased to announce that Piano Adventures® by Nancy and Randall Faber has been selected as the recipient of the MTNA Frances Clark Keyboard Pedagogy Award for 2018. The method was selected by members of the Frances Clark Center Board of Directors and ratified by the MTNA Board of Directors at its winter meeting.

This annual award was established by a bequest to the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) by the renowned pedagogue, Frances Clark. It is given annually to a person or company who has made significant contributions to the field of keyboard pedagogy, through the creation and development of products and publications that further the profession. The first award was presented in 2001 to Jane Magrath for her classic reference work The Pianist’s Guide to Standard Teaching and Performance Literature. Most recently, the award was presented to pianist and Julliard professor Paul Sheftel for his book entitled Modules. Other recipients have included Barbara Lister-Sink, James Lyke, Marienne Uszler, Maurice Hinson, the Yamaha Disklavier, Willard Palmer, Fred Karpoff, Robert Duke, and Seymour Bernstein.

“Nancy and Randy have changed the face of modern piano pedagogy,” said Larry Morton, president of Hal Leonard. “Some might even say they revolutionized piano teaching. As teachers, they saw the gaps and pitfalls in other methods, and set out to write the method they always wanted for their own students. As composers, they invoke pianism and artistic music in every original composition and arrangement — even in scale exercises — so technique and artistry is emphasized from the beginning. As educators, they understand how intrinsic motivation can work to the student’s advantage, so they created a library with nearly every genre and musical taste represented. They continue to evolve, creating new works and support materials that recognize the changing nature of teaching and learning in the digital age,” said Morton. “Their story is quite remarkable. So much of what we take for granted in modern pedagogy can be attributed to the works of Nancy and Randy Faber.”

The Fabers will be recognized at the MTNA National Conference in Lake Buena Vista, Florida at the annual Awards Brunch on March 21, 2018.

  • Bravo Nancy & Randall Faber! I am so grateful for your work. Congratulations on your award. You deserve it!!

  • What an honor. I began teaching in the late 1970s, first attending a workshop at SMU presented by Frances Clark and Louise Goss. It was a huge launch for me into a profession which has brought me much joy, and through which i have watched young people grow into piano.I began teaching with The Music Tree. Now it’s Piano Adventures and Music Tree. Congratulations on your award. Come back to Austin…or to Houston.

  • This is terrific! I was not aware of this award. I have a high regard for Francis Clark as I have read her book, Questions and Answers as well as I have been teaching from her method books, first called The Look and Listen Series, later upgraded to The Music Tree Series, for close to 30 years now. I supplement with Faber & Faber fun time books. If they ever stop publishing the Francis Clark library, I will be very sad but will definitely switch over to the Piano Adventures Series. Thank you for your blogs and wonderful teaching. I have appreciated your workshops at Meyer Music in GR.

  • Congratulations! This is a well-deserved honor. Thank you for sharing your creativity and innovative ideas with all of us!

  • Fantastic! Well done! Really pleased that all your hard work and creativity has been recognised. So well deserved.

  • Congratulations, Randy & Nancy! I’ve been using your Piano Adventures ever since you created it. Your supplemental books are student savers and I use both your classical and popular arrangements in my recitals. My students love them. Thank you so much for adding so much to my teaching these past 50 years. Gratefully, Marcia Mally

  • Congratulations Nancy and Randall! You both certainly deserve it!
I have been teaching for 46 years, have tried many methods over the years and your method books are by far the best piano educational tools on the market. I love the progressions from MY FIRST Piano Adventures right through Level 5 and beyond. I’ve been using them since the day they came out. I can’t WAIT for the release of your teacher guides for the MY FIRST books! I’ve been on back order for over a year now.
Thank you for all you do. You have no idea the influence you have on so many. CONGRATULATIONS! WELL DONE AND WELL DESERVED!

  • Congratulations! So well-deserved and appreciated by the piano teachers and students who have benefited from your method. When I had many young beginners and your books first came out, I would experiment by putting some beginners in your method and others in the other already-popular methods. In ALL cases, the ones who were first exposed to your method in their beginning year developed ease of staff-reading and fluidity of consistent hand moving to new spots on the keyboard right off the bat, and it made all the difference in their future playing. Thank you!

  • Congratulations! You deserve this award and any others coming your way! I enjoy teaching from the 3 books of the Pre-Reading course. When a youngster is in the third book, they decide Book 1 is next. The systematic approach is excellent. Thank you!
