We are doing marches. I don't have the pieces all selected yet, but am planning on pomp and circumstance, wedding marches, as well as military/patriotic marches.

Two favourites among mine and my husband's students we've done are "Creatures Great and Small" (some are asking for a second one of this theme), "Stars and Planets", and one I'm planning on doing this year will feature student compositions. One I might do in the future might be "In the Garden", which might be a good one if a teacher's studio is mostly girls.

Just interested to know who technicaly you hold a theme recitla:
are all the pieces performed connected to the theme or does each performer play one theme piece and one or two free choice pieces?

All of the pieces are performed and connected with the theme.

I don't do theme recitals within the studio. They feel too limiting to me.

Sometimes a theme will emerge and form groupings within the recital, though.

This year is labeled the "Year of Collaborative Music" by MTNA, so you could have just a general ensemble theme already pre-packaged.

One of my favorite themes to do with my students was "World Music." It opened up so many doors to talk about different kinds of music and how each of their respective sounds are accomplished. I compiled a long list of world music repertoire while I was looking for music for this one. So, if you want it, let me know.

I was thinking about doing "What a Wonderful World". Does anyone have any animal or world themes that might be better?

I don't do themed recitals, but I'd love to see Wendy's list of World Music! Please post your list if you can, Wendy!
