I am expecting a baby in Aug. I work at two differnt studios, two days a week. Once the baby arrives, I will need time to focus on my "new" family and do not want to concentrate on lesson planning, recitals, etc. I have told my boss's and they are understanding. They are both allowing me to stay until sometime in July. I have not told my parents or students yet, but would like to in the next coming week so they can start thinking about their future. Besides telling them, I would like to write a formal letter explaining my situation and reason for leaving, but also, to help them make this transition as smooth as possible.
Both studios will be looking to hire someone else, but in the meantime, I will contine teaching until July.
I*I may pick up teaching again at home in the near future, but how do I let my studetns know this without "taking" business away from the studios.

Anyone else go through this before?
Thank you!

Perhaps you could drop down to one studio instead of dropping everything.

Many studios have a contract clause that will not allow you to contact students for a certain amount of time. If that isn't the case with the ones you are involved in you can simply give students your card and give them an approximate for when you will be teaching again. You will be taking students away from the studio, no way around that. Letting them know early would be helpful if some are willing to take a lesson break until you're ready to teach again. (You mentioned it would be a short time.) That way they don't leave the next studio teacher short students when they transfer back to you.

thanks for the advice. The studios I work for didn't have me sign a contract clause, so I'm safe there! I'll keep you all posted on how I decide to go from here.

You could leave it open ended with your announcement, saying that, as of a certain date, you will no longer be teaching at Location XYZ. The astute parent who wishes to stay with you may then ask where you *will* be teaching and you can answer the question in a personal way.

I really don't think you need to explain formally why you are leaving. If you are pregnant people will probably put two and two together!

Some parents will follow you and may not mind the down time between the old studio and the new one. I had this happen to me when I quit to care for my mother. Some will stay with the present studio and you may do well to help smooth that transition by introducing the new teacher, perhaps at a group class/recital practice. Best of luck it sounds like an exciting time for you and your family.
