I have just recently federated my students. I have four that are wanting to participate in the Festival this March. They have chosen pieces from the Bulletin. (1-Mod. Diff.Class III, 1-Med. Class, 1-Mod. Diff. Class I, and 1-Diff. Class I; all piano solo.) My question is, what pieces will be appropriate for the choice selections? All four of my students are currently supplementing lessons with Helen Marlais' Festival Collection series. Does anyone know if those pieces would be appropriate? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

We have another event in the fall and I generally use that song as their choice piece. Sometimes I will use another song in a federation book. Many times I have to buy a small collection of music for one federation piece. There are often many lovely tunes on the other pages of a book. (But the two songs for the same child can't be by the same composer, so I'm talking about looking at the other books in the same level)

Check the rules of the Federation. If it's NFMC, there are a few rules--the piece has to be a certain length, it cannot be by the same composer as the required piece, it has to be by a foreign composer (there are certain composers who can qualify as foreign OR American because although they were born in a foreign country, they became naturalized citizens), and it has to be a piece written for piano--or keyboard, such as harpsichord--in its original form (no arrangements or adaptations). Almost all of the pieces in the Festival Collection would be appropriate.

Gail, those are all good points.

Isn't there a rule though about the choice piece being by a foreign composer? I mean, I don't think that counts for the primary levels right?

Yes, there are lots of rules to this thing! :-)

Thanks so much for the quick response. My students are really enjoying the Festival Collection books and I'd love to see them use something they are already enjoying. I was just hoping that there was some way to be assured that our selections would be appropriate before they spend a lot of time on them. Thanks again.

The choice piece should be at the same level of difficulty as the required piece, and at least 16 meas. in length. I have a student who'll be participating in the Mod. Difficult I class and she's playing:

Coconuts (list piece)
Sonatina in G Major Mvmt I by Dusseck (from Celebration Series 6)

I think whatever your students are playing from the Festival Collection, as long as the composer is foreign born, would be fine.

Jon, if Nancy ever gets finished writing and revising lesson books, I hope that she will compose some more sheets of teaching pieces. I absolutely adore her music! It is so imaginative and not formulistic. Since I started composing for my students I have a new respect for the art of writing music for piano students. To write like Nancy is a gift. She has my highest respect. Please pass this on!

Misslaluna,

You are absolutely right! My bad!! The foreign composer rule is only for levels E1 and above.
