i have a five year old boy that has been pecking out songs since he has been big enough to reach the keyboard, at three he was pecking out Amazing Grace, even with his toes....
My question is what is the best age to start lessons on a child, is it best to wait until they are older? or get them when they are young??????
Thank you in advance..

Five or six is fine, and I think six or seven is about average. Depends on the maturity level, too, I have a 5 year old right now who started at age 4. No problems whatsoever.

I've had students age 4 and 5 that have been ready, and 8 year olds that are not. Just depends on the child. There seems to be a big push to start piano lessons at a young age - which is fine with me. However, if I had my choice, I would wait until 7. This is a great age: reading is secure, they have a bit more independence, but they are still young enough to enjoy the kiddie-music. I personally do not see any disadvantages to waiting, but I do see a possible disadvantage to starting too early. I think Kindermusik-style programs can fill in the gap nicely.

My own daughter was like that, so I started teaching her at age 5 with pre-primer (pre-staff notation) bks. The reason I did not wait to start piano lessons later on is that she was getting up on the piano every day & playing the pieces (that I was teaching my piano students) EXACTLY the way they were supposed to be, except that she was using the wrong fingering (her hands were tiny). I figured she was going to get up there anyway; why not go ahead & start? She'll be 9 in Sept. & is still enthusiastic about piano.

I have had other students who, as was previously posted here, were not ready even at age 8.

My personal feeling is that you have to take the child's maturity & natural abilities (i.e., Does he/she have a good ear? Does he/she have a good sense of rhythm? Etc.) into account. You also have to be a COMMITTED & ENTHUSIASTIC parent. Little kids (even the ones who love piano lessons) usually won't hop right up to the piano bench & practice every day w/o being told to do so. You have to be just as committed to daily piano practice & regular attendance at lessons as you are with your child's homework assignments from school & regular attendance at school. Taking piano lessons year 'round (including summer) is essential if you want your child to make steady, week-to-week progress & not have a lot of review & catch-up work to do in the Fall.
