A 16 year old student if mine is preparing for a "Practical Musicianship" exam (level 5).One part of this is improvisation on a given theme of either an interval, a one bar rhythm or a one bar tune with chords. Are there any good materials out there to build up that kind of skill? up until now I have worked with practicing the general cadences, and putting them to "musical questions" played by me for her to answer, and I gave her a few bars of broken chords for her to continue and take on. Anything else that can help her?]]>

I've enjoyed reading everyone's replies on this thread. Eight of my students are from 2 families, and I travel to their homes for lessons. So one afternoon/evening a week I teach 4 students (30m lessons), then travel a mile up the road to the other family where I teach 4 more students. I have a 15m break between those two places, which is my packing up, driving, settling in time.

By the end of my first 4 students, I am almost always 5m over (into my 15m travel break). I really want to be better about that though, because I end up feeling too rushed as I go to the 2nd house. Also, I do really try to keep the lessons even, but because they are siblings I could (and sometimes do) take longer with one student than another. But I really don't want to make a habit of that.

I think the 5m timer idea might help me! Alternatively, I may give some thought to my structure like a PP said and the rough breakdown (5m on theory, 10m on new, etc.) and use a little timer for those -- just a vibration timer though so it's not too distracting to the students.]]>

I would definitely use Pathways to Artistry, starting with the first level technique book. It will easily help you fill in all sorts of gaps that are beyond technique.]]>

I do four hour intro to piano camp although I can easily make that five hours which I may do next year. I usually schedule a couple different options. Sometimes I go one hour each day. Sometimes I do 2- 2 hours. Some people like the less days more hours approach because they aren't having to come back as often.

MFLM put out a "classroom edition" in the last year or so. Here is the info if you want to look at it.

Thanks, Vivace. It went something like "There is one reason students come to us to play piano - to make exciting sounds on the keyboard. We cultivate a dropout when we fail to help them do that." But I can't think of the exact wording and have searched and searched for it. I referred to it this morning while speaking to a teacher's group on "Teaching Artistry from the Beginning."

I created a handout for parents in times like these. I just posted it on my blog if anyone wants to download it for future use.

My teen transfer students have this protocol:

1. Method books for sight-reading (allows me to check on basic knowledge and skills without having them feel like they're starting over)
2. Mastering the Piano, by Bigler and Lloyd-Watts
3. Dozen a Day
4. Scales Bootcamp
5. Subscription to Piano Explorer
6. Working on their own compositions (the Piano Explorer has a competition they are keen to participate in)

I switched this last September to charging tuition on a quarterly payments. My teaching year is Sep thru June. July/August are separate. Payments are due the 1st of Sep, Nov, Feb, and April. I don't do makeup lessons at all. My bookkeeping is SO much easier now.]]>
